Compact Powder Grinder with Buffer Hopper, Rotary Airlock and Cyclone
By:Salinovate Team Sep 04,2026
As powder processing requirements become more diverse, customers are looking for grinding equipment that can do more than simply particle size reduction. For many small and medium-sized production lines, limited installation space, controlled material discharge, and dust collection are equally important.
To meet these requirements, Salinovate team has developed a customized configuration for the standalone powder grinder unit(SLU series and SLZM series). The new design combines a grinder with a discharge buffer hopper, rotary airlock, and independent cyclone system, providing a compact solution for applications with moderate production capacity and limited plant space.

I. A Compact Grinder Design for Limited Installation Space
A conventional standalone grinder usually has a relatively simple layout. However, when a customer needs controlled discharge and additional dust collection, integrating these functions into the equipment layout can provide a more practical solution.
The new standalone unit configuration uses the following process: feeding hopper → grinding chamber → buffer hopper → rotary airlock → material discharge. An independent cyclone pipeline is also installed for fine dust collection. The buffer hopper provides temporary material storage after grinding, while the rotary airlock below the hopper helps control the discharge rate. This configuration can be useful for customers who need a compact powder pulverizing system with moderate capacity and additional dust-control capability.
One point should be considered during equipment selection: because the buffer hopper and rotary airlock are installed above the grinding part, the overall equipment height is greater than that of a standard standalone grinder. Depending on the configuration, the total height can be close to or above 2 meters. Customers should therefore confirm the available ceiling height before finalizing the grinder layout.
II. Display of Compact Design SLU-50 Model Powder Grinder
A recently completed example is the SLU-50 model powder grinder, configured for medium-sized material processing applications. The capacity can reach about 100-300kg/h based on different raw material.
The main configuration includes:
• 15 kw grind motor
• 100 L discharge buffer hopper
• 0.75 kw rotary airlock
• Independent cyclone pipeline
• Optional grinding cutters(disc type, hammer type, knife type, turbine type, etc)
• Customized screen options according to the required particle size
The 100L buffer hopper is positioned at the discharge side of the grinder. The rotary airlock installed underneath the hopper controls the flow of processed material and helps maintain a more stable discharge. In this configuration, the cyclone is designed primarily for fine dust collection, rather than simply serving as a material discharge device. Certainly, the cyclone and downstream dust-collection arrangement can be adjusted according to the material properties, processing conditions, required particle size, and customer requirements.

III. Design Adaptability in the Field of Powder Grinder Machine
Not all series of powder grinders and nor every model within a given series are suitable for this integrated discharge and dust collection design. Generally, this structural design is applicable to our SLU series universal powder grinder and SLZM series pin mill type grinder, specifically the small-to-medium models within these series. However, this simplified dust collection setup is inappropriate if the material is easily pulverized and production capacity requirements are high; in such cases, a separate cyclone dust collection system and a blower-assisted discharge system are required.
This design concept is particularly suitable for projects where customers need to balance:
• Limited floor or installation space
• Moderate production capacity
• Controlled material discharge
• Fine dust collection
• Customized pulverizing performance
Rather than adding separate equipment after installation, these requirements can be considered during the initial grinder design. This helps make the overall equipment layout more practical for the customer’s actual production environment.
IV. A Practical Option for Small and Medium-Sized Pulverizing Lines
To sum up, this type compact design powder grinder is a cost-effective and practical optional for small and medium-sized powder processing projects limited in installation space and purchasing cost. The compact design grinder with a buffer hopper, rotary airlock, and cyclone dust collection system can bring you a tidy production room while the powder discharging can be continuous and stable at a fixed speed.
